Sandburg Men Come Up Short Against Illinois Valley

Illinois Valley dealt the Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team just its second home loss of the season as it beat the Chargers 72-69 on Thursday at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.
The Chargers (21-8 overall, 5-4 Arrowhead Conference), who close the regular season Tuesday at Black Hawk, dropped to 14-2 on their home court this season despite a near-perfect shooting night from sophomore Scott Gowan (Rockford, Ill./Rockford East).
KEY MOMENTS
- A 3-pointer from Jean Luc Wilson (East Moline, Ill./United Township) put Sandburg ahead 46-44 with 11:30 left and gave the Chargers their first lead since 13-12.
- The Eagles (11-17, 4-5) answered with eight straight point in 1 minute, 40 seconds to go up 52-46 and never trailed again.
- Sandburg got within 72-69 on a layup by James Jones (Springfield, Ill./Lanphier) with :20.2 left. The Chargers had a chance to tie after IVCC’s Braden Edington missed the front end of a one-and-one with :18.9 to go, but Jones’ 25-footer at the buzzer went off the back rim.

Gowan scored a team-best 23 while going 8 of 9 from the field, including a 4-for-5 mark from 3-point range. Gowan also went 3 for 3 from the free-throw line and tied for the team lead with three steals.
OTHER TOP CHARGERS
- Wilson scored 14, had three steals and handed out two assists.
- Sophomore Noah Young (Colfax, Ill./Ridgeview) scored 12 and grabbed five boards.
- Jones corralled a game-high 14 rebounds, just two off his career-best.
